In this classic book the author, himself a Mason, reveals the relationship between modern Masonry & the Ancient Mysteries; the philosophy & meaning of the symbols & rites of the Craft. Walter Leslie Wilmshurst (22 June 1867 – 10 July 1939) was an English author and Freemason. He published four books on English Freemasonry and submitted articles to The Occult Review magazine. Born in Chichester, Wilmshurst was initiated as a Mason in the Huddersfield lodge in 1889, having moved to the town to become a solicitor, for a time becoming president of the Huddersfield Law Society. He died in Huddersfield.
The Meaning of Masonry W L Wilmshurst Books
I have always believed that the majority of my masonic education would not come from my time spent in lodge but from readings and lectures such as this book which so eloquently expound upon the seamingly menial tasks performed in lodge. As the sitting Junior Warden in Federal Lodge #1 under the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia FAAM I would recommend this book as reading for every lodge officer and every brother aspiring to become one. This book gives much context to your esoteric role in the function of the lodge which only serves to illuminate the importance of your office exoterically. The book went on to highlight the ceremonies of the Royal Arch and having just witnessed a Mark Master degree on Monday Night at Mt Vernon William R Singleton Chapter I further understand even more the significance of the veils. There are some references to the symbolism and regalia of English Masonry not present in American Masonry that does prompt me to do additional research on the differences between the two.Product details

The Meaning of Masonry W L Wilmshurst Books Reviews
Some can be very thought provoking......some do not agree.but willing to listen and contemplate other ideas.......religious., masonic., thought provoking historic philosophy
Do not delay. Buy this book if you desire a deeper understanding of the Craft. Written a hundred years ago and just as relevant today as the day it was published.
Tried to like it. Definitely wanted to know what the hubub is about and learn more about it, but the writing was just too dry and I couldn't finish it.
Good read about Freemason background.
I love Wilmshurst and I would strongly recommend this book for any Brethren who are truly looking to engage in the Craft with a deeper and spiritual approach. The Craft, although enjoyed on many level, truly has spiritual and deeper meaning than most Lodges currently acknowledge. This book should help shed more light to any Brother who wants to begin to understand/explore some of the hidden meanings of the Ritual, the Lodge, and the Symbols.
Books like this, although written some time ago, should help pave the way for the Masonic future.
SMIB.
This book is a must read for Masons who want to understand what the Fraternity is about. It is more than going to meetings once a month. It is a guidebook to a life style for Masons. It can be a little difficult to read as it written in an older style of writing. I am glad I had a chance to purchase this book and I will be passing it on to officers in my lodge.
One of the most coherent, spiritual discourses of Freemasonry available to the modern reader. This text is the emotional compliment to W. K. MacNulty's intellectual text "Freemasonry A Journey...".
This is a timeless text for Freemasons and non-Masons alike. It is the most influential book on my shelf, no trivial statement given that I am a long-time collector and dealer in antiquarian texts.
Too many Masons, and non-Masons for that matter, step through the rituals of their life and accept the symbols of their world without consciously reflecting on their purpose. This is not wrong by itself - the intent of Freemasonry is self-discovery by fraternity with other motivated good men.
But Wilmshurst reminds us that conscious reflection means we discover and improve our physical selves faster. When we learn from mistakes, we avoid making them again. When we learn to pace ourselves, we make the world better for those around us. As men what we most owe to our families is a better man. In short God has charged us to rise to Him and Freemasonry can help us serve Him. If we choose to see.
I recommend taking this book down at least once a month to read a random chapter. Remember our charge learn to subdue our passions, learn to be better men.
