Kristine Carlson had an idyllic life. She and her husband, Richard, had a romantic marriage, two beautiful daughters, and-thanks to the success of Richard's bestselling Don't Sweat the Small Stuff series-all the comforts of the American Dream. But on December 13, 2006, that perfect story took a sudden turn when, on a typical flight to New York, a pulmonary embolism would take Richard's life, catapulting Kristine into heartbreak and uncertainty. It was the end of life as Kristine knew it and the beginning of a journey through the depths of grief and mourning that would reveal to Kristine her true strength and an immeasurable love that cannot be broken. This book is a courageously honest memoir. It is the true story of a wife, a mother, a woman forced to come face-to-face with fear, insecurity, and the painful but ultimately precious teachings Kristine Carlson discovered along the way. This wise little book offers a timeless message of inspiration, empowerment, and courage for anyone who has experienced loss or hardship of any kind.

Heartbroken Open A Memoir Through Loss to SelfDiscovery Books

I always loved Richard Carlson and his books DONT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF, especially DONT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF IN LOVE he wrote with Kristine Carlson. I was so saddened to just find out he passed away so young, at 45, and wanted to read this account of his wife's dealing with his death.

Kristine Carlson offers a heart breaking, hopeful account of her grief process over losing her husband. Kristine and Richard are depicted as soul mates, which makes Kristine's grief a deeper, dark well she must climb out of especially if she is to carry on for her daughters.

At times its a raw account and she holds nothing back - and it's almost too painful to read. It's not so much a guide to helping you deal with grief, but one woman's path from devastation to healing. As one who's lost a loved one, I can see how it would give someone hope going through it that they too shall heal someday and move on - and that they are not so alone.

Life changes and so must we, if we are to thrive. The people we love would want us to become more of who we are not to shrink into despair, this book is a great inspiration for what comes after despair.
Very moving story which anyone who has. walked through the loss of someone close should read . The author tells it like it is when it comes to comfortimg people in their time of deep sorrow . If you have s friend dying or dealing with someone who has lost someone and don't know how to consoul another ...read this book .
A brutally honest portrayal of how a sudden loss rips you to pieces. Kristine's honesty helped me cope with my own sudden losses and I highly recommend it to anyone dealing with the sudden death of a loved one.
I bought this after my own husband passed away. But frankly, I felt it was so "perfect" and this woman handled her grief and her grieving process so easily and perfectly, that I felt something must be wrong with me. Can't recommend it to newly grieving people.
Such a sad but beautiful story.

When there are no words...

Would make a good gift for a young widow struggling with grief in the wake of sudden death of a spouse.
A wonderful way to look at deep loss...I have passed it on to others with my highest recommendation.
This was an excellent self help book and very easy to read. Sometimes functioning rationally after extreme loss is difficult, but this book gently dealt with issues people face after loss. It was extremely honest, and dealt with a few things that women face after losses that I dont believe any other author has so candidly approached.

The book is very easy to read. Simple construction and follows a well defined approach to recognizing, segmenting and working through the stages of grief not as PhDs have labeled them, but through the mantra that Kris developed. Her approach for me was much easier and simplistic in a time when the world is spinning fast. Its less "intellectual" and more realistic than other "stage of grief" books I have read.

The memoirs took us down the path the author went down, and give hope in very delicate times. Certainly the readers can relate since Kris Carlson went through these losses , not as a PhD or counselor but, as a human being.
