For centuries the breathtakingly beautiful planet Cadwal has been held in trust by a centuries-old Charter of Conservancy, created by the now-defunct Naturalist Society on Old Earth.
Over time, restrictions on population expansion written into the Charter have become irksome to some who live on Cadwal—those who would take the unexploited wealth of Cadwal for themselves, also those forced to leave the planet to keep population in check.
Glawen Clattuc grows to manhood within the insular community of Araminta Station, the primary settlement on the planet, and becomes attuned to conflicts among the parties wishing to break free of the Charter. He joins the Constabulary, and ties mysterious events and circumstances together. To uphold the Conservancy, much depends upon locating the original Charter document, which has been lost for many years; Glawen is chosen to search for the Charter, on backwater Earth and worlds beyond.
The Cadwal Chronicles was written by Vance in his maturity- an accomplished master sure of his game- using a light touch and broad palette of characters.

The Cadwal Chronicles eBook Jack Vance

Worlds flooded with sunlight, heroes both ironclad and quirky, vilians who horrify and entertain. The saga of Wayness in the second book is among the most creative, charming and compelling stories ever set down: it is impossible not to love her for her courage, honor, graceful humor and humility as she traverses some of the most wonderful and entrancing venues of Jack Vance's great body of work. Beethoven built complete new worlds in music. Vance does it with his ineffable language. Respect? Not strong enough a word. Reverence and gratitude serve in their way, but still are at best pale in light of what this writer deserves for what he has achieved here. How many stars? Look up into a crystaline sky and start counting.

The Cadwal Chronicles eBook Jack Vance Reviews

Not as good as best Vance - but definitely entertaining and worth reading. Works well as kindle - especially as it is not in print.
Excellent read. Great character and setting development that typifies Jack Vance's works. Some lighter themes than some of his other books (Clarges or Empherio), and more of an adventure and detective novel. The main setting of this book is the world Cadwal, which is also a setting in the demon prince series if I remember correctly.
One of the better works of a brilliant and genre-defining Science Fiction author whose name deserves to be mentioned alongside those of Asimov, Heinlein and Frank Herbert.
The style of writing is descriptive in it's invention and dialogue. I found his word choices to be appropriate and unexpected in a delightful way. I've read almost all he has written and found them all enjoyable and refreshing.
Araminta Station is the first book of the Cadwal Chronicles and it is a great book. The story has all the great Vance trademarks of humor, inventiveness, and incredibly real worlds that you feel you have visited yourself. The first book can be read alone without reading book 2 and 3. The last two are okay but don't live up to the promise of the first book.
As a Vance fan who's read all his SF, and has read this trilogy 20 years ago, I can absolutely recommend this to those who want a great story. Don't let the cute dialog of the young adults in the early part of the first book deter you. This soon ends and the dialog is once again up to Vance's usual quality. The plot is good, if slow to develop. Give it a try and see what you think.

And, as you read it, pay attention to Vance's views on social and political issues. Like Heinlein, Vance has strong views and is not loath to offer them in his fiction. His fascination with mysteries also is evident in the plot.

The second and third book in the series are weaker than the first. It seems to me that he lost interest in his protagonists. The second book is one long shaggy dog story and the third has only one action scene. Vance seems to forget Glawan and Wayness in favor of two new love interests and his portrayal is unconvincing.

Nevertheless, it is Vance, and so, worth reading.
Be forewarned - Jack Vance is one of my favorite writers. And I was not disapointed by this story. If you are a Jack Vance fan, you will enjoy this book and Cadwell is one of his classic creations. The last two books in the triligy lose some steam. I write this with news of Jack's Vance's recent passing and am so greatful of the worlds he created for us to enjoy in his books.

Thanks Jack!

I am very thankful for the kindle editions of Jack's books, and am better able to enjoy his books with the dictionary option. What a wordsmith Jack Vance was!
